Catch and Keep Top Talent
Mile High SHRM and BAHRA Joint Symposium
Mile High SHRM and BAHRA (Boulder Area HR Association) are joining forces for this afternoon event that tackles one of HR's most challenging topics in today's job climate: how to Catch and Keep Top Talent. The afternoon will include two speaker sessions and one panel session. There will be a networking social after the last session. Snacks will be served in the afternoon and drinks and appetizers will be served during the social.
Session 1: Retool Your Recruiting Process
It’s no secret that finding the right employees in this competitive market can be frustrating. While many people claim that low unemployment is to blame, that’s only part of the picture. The fact is you want the best candidates, not just the unemployed. In a market that favors the job seeker, old screening tactics and drawn-out recruitment processes frequently frustrate candidates, giving a negative impression of your company – or worse, the abandonment of their applications. This presentation teaches you to reassess and strengthen your hiring strategies from job description development through final interviews. Using such proven marketing and customer service strategies such as narrowcasting and client engagement, former recruiter and career coach Donna Shannon will teach you how to retool your recruitment process and keep the very best in your talent pool.
How to work collaboratively with hiring managers to identify target candidates through narrowcasting while also widening the net to tap overlooked talent.
- How to identify the recruitment procedures that are turning off your best candidates and apply client engagement tactics to keep them.
- Learn tactical plans to retool the recruitment process itself to move beyond just screening candidates and implement processes that make the job seekers feel valued.
As a career coach and former HR/Recruiter, Donna Shannon knows the hiring process inside and out. Since 2004, she has developed books and classes to help job seekers and employers build bridges and overcome the recruiting tricks that create unnecessary hiring barriers. President of Denver’s top-rated Personal Touch Career Services, Donna has presented to both job seekers and recruiters at national conferences in Denver, Orlando, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Scottsdale, AZ.

Session 3: They Fit or They Quit
Jack Welch is quoted as saying “getting the right people in the right jobs is a lot more important than developing strategy”. The obvious questions here are: What does “right fit” mean? And how does right fit, repeated over time, bring life to the culture and empower the company’s mission? Traditionally, we hire people based on a handful of conversations, references, and a list of hard skills. This approach predicts job success with only 36% accuracy - for many organizations, this leads to expensive turnover costs and a confused, unfulfilled workforce that derails strategy. For example, many jobs now involve a strategic approach that requires critical thinking and professional knowledge that reaches into cross department functions. So how can we figure out what is a “right fit” for our candidates when they might not even know what the right fit looks like? This session will explore the predictable science behind hiring the right people for the job itself, and how to give your new employees an effective on-boarding that will make them excited to come to work.
Conducting over 80 seminars and speaking engagements a year, Ed has trained and coached over 3,000 leaders and has the attention of the market on the subjects of training and creating sustainable behavior change in very critical situations. His story begins as an NCAA gymnastic coach where he was charged and fascinated by the process of how people move through fear where he learned that people are rarely effective at managing fear. The critical and often missing component to move people through fear is to understand moving through fear doesn’t take a skill, it takes a reason. Once the reason grows bigger than the fear, the decision can be made to move forward. Ed has translated this experience in coaching elite athletes to coaching leaders and managers into building high performing teams, getting results, and managing change. His relatable analogies and positive inspirational energy moves people to realize achievements and happiness never before imagined. Co-author of the book Getting Into Leadership Shape®, Ed is a genuine student of the behaviors of people who engages others in possibility thinking and challenges others to have courage and take action.
