Legislation Update/Packing Heat: Guns in the Workplace

Session Description

With workplace shootings in the news all too often, many employers are considering prohibiting employees from possessing firearms at work; others are considering allowing their employees to carry firearms for their own protection.  How should an employer navigate these treacherous waters?  This presentation will explore various laws relating to the possession of firearms in the workplace by employees.  It will include statistics for firearm violence, potential liability for employers for workplace gun violence, parking lot laws, notice laws, the Colorado concealed carry law, possession of firearms by public employees, and discrimination in employment based on ownership or firearms.  The presentation will include discussion of laws of other states on this topic.  

Colin Walker   Whether in the courtroom or the boardroom, Colin provides strategic counsel for clients facing complex employment and commercial problems.  His clients benefit from more than 20 years of trial and litigation experience.  Colin a former criminal prosecutor with the State's Attorney Office for Baltimore County. Session Description

Downsizing, layoffs, mergers, reorganization or restructuring...these kinds of organizational upheavals are the new normal in business.  Whatever the name, whatever the reason, when an employee loses a job, it's a painful, emotional and often devastating experience.  As company leaders make tough business decisions that impact an organization's humans, best companies to work for navigate layoffs and major organizational changes with compassion for the impacted employees and TLC for the "survivors."  In this highly engaging and super practical "how-to" session, attendees will learn from a moderated panel of HR executives who have been on both sides of the desk during reductions in force.  Take-aways: all the dos and don'ts for conducting human-centered, compassionate reductions-in-force. When company leaders commit to putting humans first even when business needs dictate downsizing, the dignity of those being let go can be preserved and the total well-being of the "survivors," those on which the company must rely to return productivity to its new normal, can be maintained. In short, when times get tough, the tough will learn to get compassionate by conducting human-centered layoffs.
